What's it worth? Appraisal for antique light fixture w/ hanging crystals

Chuck asks:

Here are some pics of a light that was in the house i recently purchased. The house was built in the 1840s but I know nothing about this light.

AW says: That’s an American light fixture, most likely with Czech or Austrian crystal prisms. As you many imagine the crystals are really where the money is on this piece.

That’s a beautiful fixture and should sell well if you can get just the right buyer. I hate to say it, but if you took the crystals off and sold them either individually, or as a group, you’d probably get just as much as you would for the entire fixture.

There is a high demand for these beautiful crystals, but if you were to market the fixture as a unit, it has to fit just the right are, of the right home. In other words, your market is very narrow. But there are a lot of people who may be interested in the crystals for different fixtures, or other projects.
