What's it worth? Appraisal of French Provincial style hutch
/Sandie asks:
Aloha Walt,
Attached are pictures of the hutch I would like appraised. I live in Hawaii & it was bought at a little antique store here by my grandfather about 18 years ago for $500. I never realized it until now, but it has been repainted, even looked like they may have just spray painted it.
I’m not sure what the wood is, but if it is worth anything and you need to know the wood to appraise, I can have my carpenter friend tell me. There are no markings or stamps on it anywhere. It has lights inside, but they don’t work anymore and it also has some termite damage that you can see in one of the pictures on the inner corner of the desk.
Let me know if you need any other information & thanks for your help.
Have a good weekend,
Sandie
AW says: Hi Sandie. This is a Fench Provincial style hutch, most of these are in Pecan wood. The French Provincial style has been around for hundreds of years, but this is a mid 20th century hutch with a drop front desk.
Unfortunately, the market for furniture right now if off quite a bit. This and the painted condition of your hutch are considered in the appraised values below.
Circa 1940-70
Retail value: $275
Wholesale value: $150
Quick sale: $75-$95
