Newletter 11/8/09 w Terry Kovel

                                                               This just in…

Recently I had the pleasure of interviewing Terry Kovel on episode 86 of the AuctionWally Show. I would say that Terry is probably the most knowledgeable person in the world on antiques and collectible. After all, her and her husband Ralph invented the antiques price guide.

On that episode, you’ll hear Terry talk the value of items we all have in our homes, unconventional use of antiques and much more.

Here’s a slide show review of the 42nd edition of Kovels ACPG I just published in my Examiner.com column.

Lock of  Elvis Presley’s hair at auction:

An auction gallery in England will put a lock of Elvis Presley’s hair on the auction block on November 14th.

The strand of hair from the King of Rock and Roll was saved for years by fan, Thomas B. Morgan Jr. He says he acquired it from Homer Gill Gilland, Mr. Presley’s personal barber.

The auction house,  Henry Aldridge & Son said the lock will be accompanied by letters, certification, and has a pre-auction estimate of  150 pounds to 250 pounds ($250 to $415).

                             Tips for settling an estate

Estate sale company phone interview questions:

  1. What are your companies set-up and Estate Sales fees? Are there any debris removal cost? What are your lead time requirements, do you have room on your schedule?
  2. How long have you been in the Estate Sales business?
  3. What is important to you about your service?
  4. How many Estate Sales a month does your company conduct?
  5. What is one of your biggest success stories?
If you’re in the San Francisco area, you’ll want to look at the website of my friend Martin Codina who owns Fine Estate Liquidation
The above estate sales question roster was courtesy of him.

Don’t forget if you have a question about antiques, collectibles or auctions, other than the specific value of an item, email me at wkolenda@gmail.com (a few good .jpg pics of any items is essential.)

This week’s  contest question:

What’s the 3rd business from the top listed in the resource directory of Selling Your Valuables ?

The first person to email me at wkolenda@gmail.com with the correct answer is the winner, it’s that easy. Now of course, I’ll need a way to get that package to the winner, so send your snail mail address along with your contest answers. The prize is a neat collectibles surprise envelope which includes things found in a recent estate purchase I made. Things likely to be in said envelope are vintage postcards, ephemera and who knows what?
